Should I Use Squarespace 7.0 Or 7.1?
We are big advocates for Squarespace 7.1. When Squarespace announced its launch, we immediately started planning migrating our website from its predecessor. If you are in a similar boat (where you are considering moving toward the upgraded platform) or you don't have a website yet and want to know which you should use, here is why we recommend 7.1!
Two Huge Advantages of Squarespace 7.1
One: It Offers an Improved User Experience
7.1 is just more intuitive and easier to use.
For example, one of the most common difficulties we faced with 7.0 was mobile view. Unlike 7.1, 7.0 didn't allow you to customize mobile view. Instead, your mobile view was based on where you placed blocks and elements on desktop. So there were times when we saw blocks being awkwardly displayed on mobile, and it took extra effort to fix. With 7.1, you can just edit your mobile view without it effecting desktop view or vice versa.
Two: It Offers Additional Features and Tools
And we love these features and tools! Here are a list of tools you will get with 7.1 that you won't have with 7.0:
The ability to customize the header. With 7.0, the only thing you can do is add a photo or video. With 7.1, you can add any block you want!
More heading and paragraph styles. 7.0 only allows one paragraph style and 3 heading styles. 7.1 provides you with 3 paragraph styles and 4 heading styles.
More ways to style your text. 7.1 recently gave us the ability to highlight text using different animations
A lot more customizations when it comes to styling your website design. With 7.1, you can create differently colored sections - something that 7.0 doesn't allow you to do. This offers your users a more exciting experience on your website.
Site-wide animations. 7.1 allows you to add animations to your entire website (such as making blocks fade into view as users scroll up to them). 7.0 only allows you to animate individual image blocks.
What Does This Mean If You Have 7.0 Already?
It doesn't mean that you have to move to 7.1. Squarespace is a great platform, no matter which version you are using, and Squarespace to this day continues to update them both - so while you might miss out on the features above, that doesn't mean that your platform is being neglected entirely.
Our advice would be to consider what your goals are.
Do you want to improve your website design? Then yes, we think you should move to 7.1. This also means that you will have to put time in your calendar to make this move or to contact us to help you with this process. Designing a website is not easy and there are a lot of things that the goes into developing a successful website that the average person simply does not know about.
However, if you are just looking to make small changes, such as updating content or making basic design edits, then 7.0 will be totally fine for you.
The decision ultimately comes down to your goals and needs! We hope this article has helped you decide which version of Squarespace is best for you. Good luck!
